When talking about the Grand Theft Auto VI map, the conversation almost always revolves around Vice City, and in the background appear The Keys, Grassrivers or Port Gellhorn. There is a sixth confirmed region that is barely talked about: Ambrosia.
The six regions of Leonida
Rockstar has confirmed six regions for the state of Leonida:
- Vice City — the metropolis, the modern reinterpretation of Miami.
- Leonida Keys — the southern archipelago.
- Grassrivers — the swamps, with their obvious reference to the Everglades.
- Mount Kalaga — the mountainous and forested area.
- Port Gellhorn — the west coast, port and somewhat decadent.
- Ambrosia — the great unknown.
That Ambrosia appears last in almost all enumerations is no coincidence: it is the one about which the least material has been published.
What we know about Ambrosia
The two solid facts are its location and its dominant element.
It is next to Lake Leonida, the large inland body of water of the state. And its profile is dominated by the Allied Crystal sugar refinery, an industrial facility that functions as a visual reference of the area.
That is enough to understand what kind of space it is. Ambrosia is not urban, nor a beach coast, nor wild. It is the agricultural and industrial Leonida: the inland one that produces, processes and transports.
Why it fits with the real Florida
The inspiration is recognizable. In the real Florida, the interior of the state —especially the surroundings of Lake Okeechobee— is defined by the sugar industry: huge cane farms, refineries that mark the skyline and towns whose economy depends entirely on that activity.
It is a very different landscape from postcard Miami, and that is precisely why it is interesting. Rockstar has historically built its maps based on contrast, and a sugar region next to a lake provides a register that no other region of the map covers.
What it can mean in the game
Here we enter into interpretation, and it should be marked as such: none of what follows is confirmed.
An industrial area next to a lake offers possibilities that fit with what the series usually does:
- Large facilities with interiors, which work well as infiltration scenarios.
- Cargo transport routes, historically taken advantage of by the saga for cargo missions.
- An inland body of water, different from the open sea of The Keys.
- A socioeconomic context with its own conflict, which is where GTA usually places its satire.
We repeat: this is our reading based on the type of space, not Rockstar’s information.
What is not known
For honesty with the reader, the gaps should be listed:
- There is no labeled official map. Rockstar has not published a complete map with the boundaries of each region.
- Its towns are not known nor its specific points of interest.
- Its relative size with respect to the other five regions is unknown.
- It has not been shown in depth in any promotional material.
Why we pay attention to it anyway
Because the map is misunderstood if a sixth of it is ignored. The mental image that many people have of GTA VI is “Vice City and surroundings”, and that underestimates the scale of Leonida.
Ambrosia is, today, a gap in the collective mental map. When Rockstar publishes material about the area, it will be one of the novelties that most change the perception of the whole.
We will update this guide as soon as official information is available.
