When Rockstar Games developed Red Dead Redemption 2, it set a standard in the industry never surpassed regarding wildlife: over 200 species with real food chains, predators hunting prey, scavengers feeding on remains, and a biological response system to the player’s scent and sounds.
For Grand Theft Auto VI, the studio has taken that ecological engine and transferred it to one of the most fascinating and dangerous subtropical ecosystems on the planet: the Florida peninsula and its swamps.
We review the animal species confirmed in the Leonida trailers and how they will interact with Jason, Lucia, and the state’s inhabitants.
1. The American alligator: The true master of Leonida
If Los Santos had the elusive mountain lion in the hills, the absolute protagonist of Leonida’s fauna is the Mississippi alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).
Rockstar has turned these reptiles into the perfect reflection of Florida’s chaos:
- In their natural habitat (Grassrivers): Alligators patrol the swampy waters of the wetlands, stalking beneath the surface of water lilies and attacking any unwary animal or swimmer who falls from a boat or airboat.
- Invasion of urban areas: The viral scene from the trailer where a wildlife control worker removes a giant alligator from the bottom of a private pool is a daily occurrence in Miami. In GTA 6, reptiles can wander through residential canals, suburban gardens, golf courses, and commercial parking lots.
2. The Grassrivers swamps and tropical avifauna
The fictional equivalent of the Everglades National Park houses one of the highest concentrations of wading and marine birds in North America:
- Flocks of Caribbean flamingos: In trailer 1, a flock of hundreds of pink flamingos can be seen taking off from the wetlands as a motorized airboat passes, demonstrating the RAGE engine’s ability to manage hundreds of animal entities with individual flapping and dispersion physics.
- Pelicans and herons: They rest on the mooring posts of the docks and dive plummeting into the bays to catch fish.
- Invasive green iguanas: Resting on stone walls and palm tree branches in the parks of Vice City Beach.
3. Marine life of the Keys: Sharks and coral reefs
The southern archipelago of Leonida (inspired by the Florida Keys) stands out for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, ideal for water sports and underwater exploration:
- Hammerhead sharks and bull sharks: Bathers on the beaches of Vice City are not alone. If you swim offshore past the safety buoys, sharks will prowl in circles before initiating an attack.
- Dolphins and sea turtles: They can be spotted swimming in groups alongside the bows of motorboats and jet skis in the open sea.
- Sport fishing and reefs: The fishing system inherited from RDR2 will allow players to equip rods from recreational vessels to catch highly sought-after species like sailfish, tarpon, and barracuda.
4. Domestic animals and pets in the city
Urban life in Vice City is distinguished by the omnipresence of pets with highly detailed animations:
- Dogs of identifiable breeds walking on a leash with their owners through Lummus Park (chihuahuas, rottweilers, poodles).
- Dynamic reactions to the noises of roaring engines, gunshots, and fireworks, with pets pulling on the leash or fleeing frightened towards the doorways of homes.
The integration of this biosphere turns Leonida into a world that breathes on its own, where wild nature constantly reclaims its space against the concrete and neon lights of civilization.
