On 29 September, Game Informer published issue 382 with GTA VI on the cover: a 14-page feature built from interviews with several Rockstar lead designers, with 12 new screenshots. It is the most concrete information Rockstar has shared about Leonida since the second trailer, and most of it is about the map.
The full feature is behind Game Informer’s paywall. Here we only include details that match across several outlets that have read it in full.
The map: roughly twice the size of GTA V’s
Rockstar describes Leonida as roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map, and denser too: more shops, more buildings with interiors and more things to interact with than in any previous GTA.
There is no official figure in square kilometres. The community estimates we covered in our map size guide ranged from 1.5 to 2.2 times GTA V, so the official figure lands at the top of that range.
The six regions are confirmed:
- Vice City, the big city. What we know about it is in what Vice City will be like.
- The Leonida Keys, the southern archipelago (Keys guide).
- Grassrivers, the Everglades-inspired swamps (Grassrivers guide).
- Port Gellhorn, the industrial city on the west coast (Port Gellhorn guide).
- Ambrosia, the farming area by the lake (Ambrosia guide).
- Mount Kalaga National Park, the mountainous, forested north (Mount Kalaga page).
The pause-menu map will have a more satellite-style look.
Wildlife: more than 170 species
This is the section with the most new numbers:
- More than 170 animal species in total.
- More than 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles.
- Species mentioned: alligators, manatees, flamingos, pelicans, sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish.
- There are also invasive species, as in real Florida: green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques.
- Marine animals have their own movement, and some are iridescent, translucent or bioluminescent. Fur and feathers get wet, dirty and matted depending on the environment.
For comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 had around 200 species. What had already been seen in the trailers is in Leonida’s wildlife and ecosystems.
Weather: local, persistent and with hurricanes
Rockstar has rebuilt the weather system from Red Dead Redemption 2:
- Weather is local: it can pour in one area while it is sunny nearby, with clouds moving across the map.
- It is persistent: puddles and wet surfaces remain after rain, and rainbows can appear.
- Tropical storms and hurricanes can hit. Rockstar has not said how often, or whether they affect missions.
- Wind moves hair, debris, water and vegetation, with sea breezes at sunset.
People and activities
Leonida’s residents will have more physical variety: different heights, builds and weight distribution, with skin details such as freckles, moles and tan lines. There will also be more clothing and accessories than in any previous GTA.
Activities mentioned include base jumping, billiards, the gym, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, airboats, jet skis and zoos.
On the story side, the feature says the relationship between Jason and Lucia will partly change depending on how you play, with activities they can do together.
Still not confirmed
- The map’s exact area.
- How often hurricanes happen and how they affect the game.
- A PC version: GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
We will add these details to each region’s location pages as Rockstar shows more.
